what is the link between Easter and crafting?

26 March 2025

The month of Easter is almost upon us! At molten wonky, it definitely has to be one of our favourite celebrations of the year. Why? Because of all the Easter crafts, of course.

You’ve probably seen tons of Easter craft ideas popping up around the place, from dyeing eggs to making handmade bunnies in some shape or form. But, the thing is… we’ve never actually stopped to think about why Easter and crafting often go hand-in-hand.

In true molten wonky style, we got curious. So, we’ve done a bit of research into the history behind Easter and why crafting is such a big part of this holiday.

Why is crafting at the heart of Easter?

Before the supermarket shelves were stacked with chocolate eggs in every shape, size, and variation, adults and children would decorate real eggs to symbolise Easter’s themes of spring, rebirth, and creativity. While this is still a huge focus for many, chocolate (unsurprisingly) took over.

Here are just a few ways crafts for Easter began:

  • Early Christians in Mesopotamia dyed eggs after Easter to represent new life, rebirth, and resurrection.

  • From the 18th century, pace eggs were a common tradition amongst children in England. They were hard-boiled hen, duck, or goose eggs dyed with a colourful shell.

  • In medieval Europe, eggs were decorated and given as gifts to friends and family.

  • Ancient Egyptians used to engrave, paint, and embellish ostrich eggs to symbolise eternal life.

  • In 1290, King Edward I paid for 450 eggs to be covered in gold leaf and given to his entourage as a gift.

Crafting brings people together

One fact about Easter that still rings true today is that it is a family holiday, often marked by Easter craft activities that bring all age groups together. If we look back to Easter’s religious roots, it’s a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration — and crafting reflects this.

From planning a grand Easter egg hunt embellished with handmade decorations to gathering around the table with pens, tissue paper, and coloured card, Easter craft ideas are all about slowing down, staying mindful, and enjoying uninterrupted quality time with those you love most.

Spring = creative freedom

Maybe it’s the fresh air, the longer days, or the burst of colour from flowers in bloom — there’s just something that makes us want to get creative when Spring arrives.

Easter and spring are all about new beginnings and trying something new, and many turn to Easter craft kits to broaden their creative horizons. From glass fusing and embroidery to painting and needle felting, playing with vibrant colours, shapes, and textures just feels right during this season.

It’s also a time when many fill their home with colourful decorations and maximalist interior decor. Take a look at our recent blog, which answers an age-old question: Can a Colourful Home Make You Happier?

Crafting creates memories

Ultimately, one of the main reasons why we turn to crafting at Easter is because it’s an act that brings joy and makes memories. These tangible crafts and art creations (no matter how elaborate or simple!) last far longer than any chocolate egg, marking a time well spent with family and friends.
